What is Continuing Education?

Continuing education started at the University of Wisconsin at the beginning of the last century when professors from the university went out into the community to teach practical classes to locals.

These days, continuing education has become a whole lot more. Whether you’re looking to get your bachelor’s degree, learn a new language, or brush up on the new programs you need for work, continuing education classes are available to fit your goals and schedule.

Continuing education classes include degree programs offered for non-traditional students, personal enrichment classes that can be taken individually, and professional education. Continuing education generally doesn’t include more basic instruction, such as GED courses or vocational programs, and instead refer to programs for those who already have a basic education.

Many companies require that their employees take continuing professional education classes, often arranged by the company, so that they can stay up-to-date on the latest trends and technologies in their fields.

Is Continuing Education the same as Online Education?

Not exactly. Continuing education consists of post-secondary education whereas online education is offered at all levels. Additionally, continuing education can be taught in classrooms at local colleges or community centers, often at nights, on the weekends, and online. Online education can play a key role in continuing education.
