by Winter CaseyAs the economy struggles and industries shift – consider the thousands of journalists who have been laid off in the past year – many have been forced to consider changing careers. Others sometimes find that after a few years in a given profession they discover they lack a passion for what they are doing and yet are not sure what steps they can take to feel more fulfilled.
Nearly two-thirds of workers who change jobs or 27 percent of all older workers switch occupations, according to the Urban Institute. A poor economy and a generation of baby boomers delaying retirement increase the pool of potential career changers. The institute reported in May of this year that changing careers is common among older ages.
The good news is that, even though these statements may still hold true, the growth of the Internet has really changed the game for those considering a career shift. The Internet is amassed with information on various jobs, and tutorials can be found to explain how to tweak a resume or write a cover letter to market oneself for a new line of work.
The World Wide Web has also made it easier to get that new degree required for a desired job. Earning an online degree or certificate is often a much more affordable and flexible way to learn a new trade. An online degree further enables one to gain skills for a new job without having to leave work to pursue it.
A number of colleges and universities that offer online learning opportunities will also provide advice on what degree or training program might work best for an individual’s career goals. The Central Piedmont Community College’s resources for changing careers website, for example, dedicates a section to jobs with anticipated future demand.
Thanks to the technology of the 21st century, pursuing a new line of work does not need to be as financially or emotionally stressful as it once was. A parent at home with a baby can take a class online or do research on a career move without having to leave the living room.
Often times skills collected in a previous profession can benefit a career changer in his or her next chapter. Don’t let an unsatisfying job get you down, better jobs await!
